FAIRFIELD, CT (August 20, 2013) - The Sacred Heart field hockey team was picked to finish fifth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll announced on Tuesday afternoon. The 2013 season marks the inaugural year the MAAC will support Field Hockey as a sport and championship.
The Rider Broncs, who come into the season on the heels of three-straight NEC Championships, were tabbed as preseason favorite. Quinnipiac University finished second in the poll with 43 points. Monmouth University was third with 37 points, followed by Robert Morris University (25), Sacred Heart University (20), Bryant University (18) and Siena College (9).
Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Altepeter (Chesterfield, MO) represents the Pioneers being named to the Preseason All-MAAC team. Altepeter saw the majority of minutes in goal last season, posting a 2.00 goals against average with 110 saves. She was fifth in the NEC last season in both categories and ranked third among league leaders with a .759 save percentage.
SHU will bring back a pair of their top-scorers from last season in sisters Liz Bergman (Blandon, PA) and Sarah Bergman (Blandon, PA). Liz Bergman tied for the team lead with five goals and finished the season with a team-best 12 points. Sarah Bergman had three goals last season and led the team with four assists. She finished the season earning a spot on the 2012 All-NEC second team.
