VILLANOVA, PA (August 31, 2013) - The Sacred Heart field hockey team is off to a 2-0 start to their season thanks to a 2-1 victory at Villanova University Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers posted a pair of second half goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and complete the opening weekend of the season in perfect fashion.
The Pioneers (2-0) fell behind early on Saturday but again clamped down defensively in the second half en route to the win. Villanova's Jessica Swoboda opened the scoring just over 16 minutes in, converting on a penalty corner. Swoboda beat Pioneer keeper Mary Altepeter (Chesterfield, MO) right in front to the lower left corner of the goal.
SHU held Villanova off the scoreboard from there as Altepeter made six of her total seven saves after the Swoboda goal. The Pioneers got just three shots off in the second half with senior Stephanie Frye (Walpole, MA) had a hand in both scores.
Sophomore Christine Mace (Norwalk, CT) buried a shot from the left side at 57:24, coming off a feed from Frye to tie the game. Frye would deliver the game-winner just under 10 minutes later getting a tip-in right in front of the cage off an assist by senior Jen O'Malley (Boston, MA).
The Pioneers will remain on the road for two more games next week. SHU will stay in-state and pay a visit to the Yale Bulldogs next Saturday at 2 pm.
