Field Hockey Struggles Against Rider in 4-0 Defeat

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (October 27, 2013)—In the second straight game, the Sacred Heart field hockey team was shut out on the road. Sunday afternoon, the Pioneers dropped the game 4-0 to the defending champion Rider Broncs. SHU falls to 4-11 on the season and 0-4 in MAAC play.

The Pioneers were outshot 18-2 in the first half, but goalkeeper Mary Altepeter (Chesterfield, Mo.) only allowed one goal to Kalyn O'Brien while tallying 13 saves. SHU's Stephanie Frye (Walpole, Mass.) accounted for the Pioneers' only two shots and shots on goal in the period.

In the 51st minute of the game, O'Brien managed to get a chip shot off the cross past Altepeter for Rider's second score of the game. Less than eight minutes later, the Broncs were still threatening and Alicia Govannicci found Nicole Hareau from the corner to put Rider up 3-0. In the 61st minute the Broncs got another goal, their final of the game, off a corner kick. This time it was Sandra Penas to Dezarae Fillmyer.

Frye led SHU again in the second half with two shots on goal, but the Pioneers were still outshot 15-4.

Sacred Heart hits the field again this Friday against Siena in their last home game of the season.
