Field Hockey Announces Bergman and Altepeter as 2014 Captains

FAIRFIELD, CONN. (May 13, 2014)--Sacred Heart University Field Hockey Head Coach Katie Kloeckener named 2013 All-MAAC second team selections Liz Bergman (Blandon, Pa.) and Mary Altepeter (Chesterfield, Mo.) as captains for the upcoming 2014 season.

"Liz and Mary will be a great pair of captains to lead our team," said Kloeckener. "Both have garnered All-Conference awards on the field, but also respect amongst their teammates off the field. On a daily basis they set the standard on the field and in the classroom, as well as consistently raise the bar of their expectations of themselves. I really look forward to them working together to lead this team to greater heights."

Bergman led the Pioneers this past season with five goals. The junior midfielder had nearly double the amount of shots on goal than her nearest teammate and accounted for one third of all SHU shots on goal and 35% of Sacred Heart goals.

Altepeter earned her All-MAAC Second Team spot after manning the cage in all 17 of the Pioneers games in 2013. She ended the year 4-13 picking up some tough overtime losses. The sophomore made 139 saves this season posting a .728 save percentage.
