DAVIDSON, NC - Nicole Morgan scored her second goal of the game, just over three minutes into overtime, to give Appalachian State a 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart in the season opener for both teams.
The game was played at Davidson University in North Carolina and the Pioneers got out fast and took a 2-0 lead into the intermission. Sophomore Chelsea Carlson (Peterborough, NH) got things going 5:41 into the game with an unassisted goal and scored another just over six minutes before the half.
SHU was outshot in the half 10-7 but junior keeper Kim Stow (Norwalk, CT) kept the Pioneers on top with six saves.
The Pioneers kept the shutout for the majority of the second half, but the Mountaineers finally got on the board with a shot from the top of the circle by Morgan at the 60:47 mark. Kate Garnet tied the score off a feed from Lauren Kloeppinger with just over four minutes left in regulation.
Morgan notched the game winner 3:01 into the extra frame, with another assist by Kloeppinger, to give the Mountaineers the victory.
Appalachian State outshot the Pioneers 23-17 in the game. Stow finished with nine saves, while Bridgette Street had nine for the Mountaineers.
The Pioneers will finish their southern swing on Sunday by taking on Davidson at 1:30 pm.
