FAIRFIELD, CT - Senior Whitney Russo (Waterville, ME) blasted home the game-winner in overtime from eight yards off a penalty corner by junior Hannah Robinson (Watertown, MA) to lead the Sacred Heart field hockey team to a 4-3 win over visiting Bucknell Sunday afternoon.
Bucknell jumped out to a 2-0 lead early, using a goal by Austin Thomas just over a minute into the contest and one from Caroline Coady at the 21:05 mark. The Pioneers, now 1-5, got one back two minutes later on the first goal of the year from junior Dana Luhrs (Milford, PA), assisted by Chelsea Carlson (Peterborough, NH).
Luhrs tied the game for SHU just 3:51 into the second half. Robinson set that goal up with her first assist of the game off a penalty corner. The Bisons, 4-2, answered at 54:40 off a rebound from ten yards out. It was her third goal of the season.
Freshman Kim Pobutkiewicz (W. Long Branch, NJ) picked an excellent time for her first collegiate goal for Sacred Heart. She knocked home a rebound from Luhrs at 65:54 that would send the game into overtime.
Bucknell outshot the Pioneers in the extra frame, 5-2, but Russo and Robinson combined off a corner 10:47 into the OT to give the Pioneers their first win of the season.
Junior goalie Kim Stow (Norwalk, CT) came up big for the Pioneers. She made 15 saves as the Bisons outshot SHU in the game 30-17.
The Pioneers will be in action again on Thursday at 7:00 pm against Maine. That game is being played at Yale University in New Haven.
