NEW HAVEN, CT (October 16, 2009) – The Sacred Heart University field hockey team dropped a non-conference decision, 4-1, to Hofstra at Yale University’s Johnson Field Friday evening. The loss brings the Pioneers’ record to 1-13 overall, while the Pride improve to 10-6.
Junior Nancy Wagenbrenner put Hofstra on the board first with an unassisted goal 18:12 into the first half. Sacred Heart sophomore Chelsea Carlson (Peterborough, NY/Contoocook) knotted the game up at 1-1 with an unassisted goal of her own seven minutes later.
The Pride would grab the lead before the end of the half as junior Amy-Lee Levey got off a shot in front of the cage that was stopped by SHU junior goalkeeper Kim Stow (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk). Levey followed up with a second shot off the rebound and found the back of the net.
Senior Kristin Thompson and junior Becky Kazaks added some insurance by each scoring in the second half for Hofstra. The Pride outshot the Pioneers 13-8.
Stow and Hofstra keeper Amanda Heyde each made five stops in net.
The Pioneers return to action Sunday as they face Bryant at 12:00 pm on Campus Field.
