Bergin and Riber Lead After First Round of Hartford Invitational
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior Carly Bergin (Binghamton, N.Y.) and sophomore Gabriella Riber (Stockholm, Sweden) share the lead at the Hartford Invitational with identical 78s. Each Sacred Heart golfer shot a 39 on both the front and back nines of the par-72, 5,801-yard Rockledge Golf Course.
Bergin led the field of 30 golfers with three birdies on the day.
The Pioneers are in first place after the first day of competition with a score of 315. The next closest team in the five-team field is the host, Hartford, at 330. All five golfers for SHU ended the first round in a tie for fifth place or better.
Freshman Jennifer Clinton (Sayville, N.Y.) sits in fourth place at 79. She led the field at the turn with a 37 and followed it up with a 42 on the back nine. Juniors Michelle Riber (Stockholm, Sweden) and Brianna Carnahan (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) are tied for fifth at 80. Riber shot a 41 and a 39, while Carnahan booked a 40 on both halves of the course.
The Pioneers close out their final tune-up before the Northeast Conference Championship tomorrow with the second round of the Hartford Invitational teeing off at 8:30 am.
