Pioneers In Fifth Place After First Round of NEC Women’s Golf Championship

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Sacred Heart women's golf team finished the opening round of the 2013 Northeast Conference Women's Golf Championship in fifth place Friday at LPGA International.

Gabriella Riber (Stockholm, Sweden) and Malin Wallhede (Molnlycke, Sweden) each carded 77s on the par-72 course in Friday's first round. Riber shot even par on the back nine to finish the round at +5. Wallhede was +2 on the front nine and also finished +5, putting her and Riber tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard.  Jennifer Clinton (Sayville, N.Y.) shot an eight-over 80 on Friday, going two-over on the back nine with birdies on the last two holes. Brianna Carnahan (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring group for Sacred Heart with a 15-over 87.

The Pioneers had a team score of 321, +33 in the first round. Sacred Heart is three strokes behind Quinnipiac at 318. LIU Brooklyn leads after the first round with a team score of 304, eight shots ahead of Fairleigh Dickinson. The Pioneers wrapped up play one stroke ahead of Saint Francis U.

Second-Round play begins Saturday morning.
