Hayward Wins RI Amateur Championship

Sacred Heart University golfer Kelsey Hayward (Seekonk, Mass.) captured the Rhode Island State Amateur Championship, held this weekend at Cranston Country Club.

Hayward, a Bay View Academy (RI) graduate, shot a 73 in Thursday's 18-hole stroke play opening, the low score, by seven strokes, of the qualifying round. As the top-seed in match play the rising senior opened with a 7&5 win over eighth-seeded Kathy Mis.  Hayward won her semifinal match in convincing fashion as well, defeating Sharon Muncy 5&4. She defeated the second-seed, Jackie Booth, in the final to capture the 2014 RI Women's State Amateur crown.

Hayward, who spend two seasons at Mount St. Mary's, completed her first campaign with the Sacred Heart women's golf team in 2013-14.  She captured the individual crown at the 2014 Lonnie Barton Classic, shooting a plus-7, 151 over 36 holes. Hayward and the Pioneers being the 2014-15 campaign September 13-14 at the Dartmouth Invitational.
