Womens Ice Hockey Stumbles in First Contest of 2010-11
ORONO, Maine – The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team opened the 2010-'11 season at Maine this evening with a 7-0 blanking to the Black Bears. The Pioneers take the ice again tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm for a rematch of tonight's contest.
Maine scored early and often, beginning with a score by junior defender Ashley Norum 2:23 into the game. After that, Sacred Heart freshman goaltender Alexius Schutt (Elk River, Minn.) kept the Black Bears off the board until the 17:20 mark when sophomore defender Chloe Tinkler found the back of the net. Senior forward Jennie Gallo put one more in for Maine by the end of the first to put the Black Bears up by three.
Schutt, who totaled 45 saves in her first collegiate game, allowed just one goal in the second period and kept Maine scoreless through most of the third. Fellow freshman Isabella Santore (Millington, N.J.) made her first career appearance between the pipes for the Pioneers in the final four minutes and recorded her first career save.
Senior forward Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, Ont.) peppered Black Bears sophomore goaltender Brittany Ott with seven shots on net, while junior defender Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, Conn.) put five shots on the cage. Ott finished the game with 19 saves to earn the shutout.
For the game, Main outshot Sacred Heart 53-19. The Black Bears converted on two out of six power plays, while the Pioneers were unsuccessful in all four attempts.
