(Orono, Maine) - The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team lost 11-0 to the University of Maine Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena to complete a two-game series to open the 2010-11 season.
Dominique Goutsis and Myriam Croussette both scored twice for the Black Bears, who outshot the Pioneers 59-12. Pioneer goalie Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) held Maine to just one goal in the period, making 15 saves on 16 shots. Danielle Ward's marker at the 13:59 mark was the only shot to beat Schutt in the period in the freshman's second career start.
However, Maine generated 26 shots in the second and took off with goals by Goutsis, Jerry Kistner, Kerry Mayhew, Kristi King, and Brittany Dougherty to jump to a 6-0 lead going into the third period. Freshman goalie Isabella Santore (Millington, NJ) relieved Schutt at the 14:26 mark of the second, and stopped all four shots she faced in the frame. However, Croussette scored twice in the third, with Danielle Ward, Brianne Kilgour, and Chloe Tinkler adding goals as well.
Schutt finished with 32 saves, while Santore stopped 16 shots.
The Pioneers are next in action in an exhibition at Rhode Island Saturday, October 2 at 3:00 p.m.
