Third Period Costly for Women’s Ice Hockey

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Sacred Heart women's ice hockey held strong with host Brown University, on Saturday, but a three-goal third period paved the way for a 5-1 victory for the home team.

Senior forward Erica Kromm scored the first goal of the game 14:23 into the first frame.  Brown built a 2-0 lead when sophomore forward Kelly Griffin added a power play score at the 6:49 mark of the second.

Junior defender Caitlin Gottwald (Reading, Mass.) tallied her first goal of the season to cut the lead in half, a little more than 11 minutes into the second stanza.

In the third, sophomore Erica Farrer posted a pair of goals, including one shorthanded, to pull away from the Pioneers.  For the game, Brown outshot Sacred Heart 47-21.

Freshman netminder Alexius Schutt (Elk River, Minn.) made 42 saves, while her counterpart sophomore Katie Jamieson made 20.

The Pioneers are back in action Thanksgiving weekend as they face Quinnipiac in the Nutmeg Classic at Quinnipiac.
