Pioneer Women Drop Overtime Decision at Nichols

HARRISVILLE, R.I. - The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team fell in overtime at Nichols, 3-2, Saturday evening.  The Pioneers had a one goal lead heading into the final seconds of regulation, but Bison sophomore Mary Fehr netted the equalizer with 15 seconds left and the NC net wide open.

In overtime, junior Kritsa-Jean Forand found the back of the net for the game winning score.

Sacred Heart was held scoreless for the first 49 minutes of play, but then senior Brittany Hartman (Edina, Minn.) scored her fourth goal of the year, assisted by classmate Taryn Lapierre (Oakland, R.I.) on the power play, to tie the game at one.  Less than a minute later, Tara Kent (Glenview, Ill.) netted another power play score to give the Pioneers the lead, off a feed from classmate Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, Conn.).

The Pioneers, who have struggled to score and put shots on net so far, fired off a season-high 70 shots at the Bison goal.  Freshman Francesca Palazzo stood her ground for Nichols and came up with 68 shots in the hard fought victory.  For SHU, freshman Alexius Schutt (Elk River, Minn.) provided 17 saves between the pipes.

For Nichols, it was their first win of the season as they improve to 1-3, while Sacred Heart fell to 1-8.

The Pioneers are back on the ice as they compete in the Nutmeg Classic, hosted by Quinnipiac on November 26 and 27.  SHU takes on the host Bobcats in the first round at 4:00 pm.
