HAMDEN, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team played in the semi-finals of the Nutmeg Classic against host Quinnipiac, on Friday afternoon. The Pioneers took a 9-1 loss and will take on the loser of Yale and Connecticut tomorrow at 4:00 pm.
The loss dropped SHU to 1-9-0, while the Bobcats improved to 10-6-1 overall.
Freshman Sara Hanna (Lino Lakes, Minn.) scored the only goal for the Pioneers, her second of the season, off an assist from junior defender Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, Conn.). For Palazzo it was her team-leading fourth helper of the season.
QU was consistent throughout the afternoon as the hosts posted three goals in each of the three periods. Freshman Kelly Babstock provided much of the firepower as she scored twice and assisted on four goals. Junior Kate Wheeler added three assists and one goal.
In net for Sacred Heart, freshman Alexius Schutt (Elk River, Minn.) made 57 saves, including 26 in the second period. The 57 saves is the second most in a game in her young career. Former SHU goaltender Amanda Nagel was in net for Quinnipiac. Nagel, a junior out of Greenwood, Minn., played the first two periods and made five saves.
