Pioneers Beat URI 7-4 on Senior Day

(Bridgeport, CT) – The Sacred Heart Pioneer women's hockey team beat the University of Rhode Island Rams 7-4 on Senior Day, with class of 2011 going out winners in the final home game of their careers at the Wonderland of Ice Saturday afternoon.  Seniors Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, MN), Kristina Hankins Lexington, MA), Taryn Lapierre (Oakland, RI) and Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) all scored goals to lead SHU to victory.

Sacred Heart opened the scoring at 6:22 of the first when Hartman wristed one under the glove-side crossbar, with assists going to Catie Ladner (Chaska, MN) and Jackie Galvin (Canton, MA).  Sarah Delaney  (Whittman, MA) made it 2-0 SHU a little more than two minutes later, set up by Fontaine and Jaime Mey (Middletown, RI) at 8:31. Justine Ducie put URI on the board at 12:45 of the first with a goal set up by Meghan Birnie and Layla Robidoux.

URI came back to tie the game in the second period, even though Sacred Heart scored 25 seconds into the period to go up 3-1 on a power play goal by Hankins.  She moved in on the rush for a wrist shot, with Mey and Delaney picking up assists.  URI answered with a goal by Lauren Hillberg 2:45 into the second, with Robidoux and Amanda Tosani assisting.  However, Fontaine drove a slap shot home at 4:26 of the second, assisted by Jennifer Burroughs (Raleigh, NC).  The Rams then stormed back with back-to-back goals by Danika Korpacz at 5:21 and Lauren Hillberg at 13:58 to send the game to the second intermission tied at four.

Lapierre scored what proved to be the game winner off, sneaking in the tie-breaking goal with a near side wrist shot 4:10 into the third.  Caitlyn Gottwald (Reading, MA) and Erin Burke (Franklin, MA) earned the helpers.  Tara Kent (Glenview, IL) made it a two-goal cushion with a goal at 12:02 of the third off a scrum in front of the net, with Mey and Delaney assisting.  Lapierre added her second of the period off a rebound of a shot by Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT), with a secondary assist going to Jackie Galvin (Canton, MA) with 1:04 left.

Before the game, Hartman, Hankins, Lapierre, and Fontaine were honored along with fellow seniors Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON), Jessica Rice (Trumbull, CT), and Jackie Galvin in a pre game ceremony for their four years as members of the Sacred Heart women's hockey program.

"I just want to thank the seniors for their four years," said head coach Tom O'Malley.  "They have greatly improved our program and are an important reason we are where we are now.  They will be missed."

The Pioneers close out the regular season portion of their schedule next weekend, with two games at Neumann on Friday, February 18 and Saturday, February 19.  Both face offs are at 7:00 p.m.
