ASTON, Pa. – The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team dropped game one of a weekend series at Neumann University, 9-1, Friday evening. The loss dropped the Pioneers to 8-18, while the Knights improved to 14-6-4 on the season.
Neumann led at the first intermission off a goal from Nikki Blazenko just 18 seconds into the game. However, it was in the second period where the game was blown wide open as the Knights tallied five scores in the period.
Senior forward Taryn Lapierre (Oakland, R.I.), in her first game back from injury, netted the lone score of the night for SHU midway through the third period.
Freshman netminder Alexius Schutt (Elk River, Minn.) played over 38 minutes between the pipes and recorded 35 saves and gave up six goals, while junior Raelene Sydor (St. Albert, Alta.) came on in relief and made nine and allowed three. For Neumann, Shannon Donnelly completed the win by making just 18 stops.
The Pioneers and Knights face-off again tomorrow when the puck drops at 7:00 pm.
