COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team fell to host St. Michael's in the ECAC Open consolation game, 9-2, Sunday afternoon. Senior forward Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, Ont.) scored twice for the Pioneers, who finish the 2010-'11 season 8-21-0, while the Purple Knights improved to 6-19-2.
Each team put 42 shots on goal, but St. Michael's senior goaltender Alysia Goldman was the difference maker in net as she stopped 40 shots. For SHU, freshman Alexius Schutt (Elk River, Minn.) made 33 saves.
The Purple Knights came out of the gates red hot as they put in four goals in the first period. Junior Madelena Santore posted the first score just 44 seconds into the contest and sophomore Emily Paquin tallied the eventual game winner on a power play at the 10:33 mark.
Fontaine netted each of her two goals in the second period. The first came at even strength, 7:14 into the frame. She scored her second and ninth of the season on a power play at the 14:46 mark. Junior forward Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, Conn.) assisted on each goal.
