(Middletown, RI) – Jamie Mey (Middletown, RI) and Alana Woodford (Scituate, MA) both scored for the Pioneers, but he Sacred Heart Women's Hockey team lost 5-2 to the Salve Regina Seahawks Tuesday night.
Five different Seahawks scored to lead Salve Regina's offensive attack, beginning with Samantha Zitzer at 10:18 of the first. Mey, playing in her hometown, tied the game with an unassisted goal at 14:55.
Salve Regina took the lead for good with two in the second, the first coming on a shorthanded goal by Rachel Porter, assisted by Sarah Markey, at 6:28. Porter then set up Shannon Ellis at 16:19 to give the Seahawks a two-goal lead.
The Pioneers cut the deficit to one when Woodford scored at 11:12 of the third, with Maura Leahy (Ashburnham, MA) and Briana Connolly (Duxbury, MA) earning the assists. However, Salve Regina put the game out of reach on goals by Shannon Coleman at 15:55 and an empty netter by Taylor Shepherd with 48 seconds remaining.
Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) made 32 saves, as Salve Regina outshot SHU 37-30 for the game. Ali Muehlbronner stopped 28 Pioneer shots for the win in net for the Seahawks.
SHU is next in action Friday, January 20 at the Wonderland of Ice when they host Lindenwood in the first of a two-game weekend series.
