Women's Hockey Completes Sweep of URI with 6-3 Win
(Bridgeport, CT) – Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT) and Natasha Klinoff (Concord, MA) both scored twice for the Pioneers, as the Sacred Heart Women's Hockey team completed a weekend sweep of the University of Rhode Island Rams with a 6-3 victory Saturday afternoon at the Wonderland of Ice.
Jennifer Burroughs (Raleigh, NC) opened the scoring 1:15 into the game, with Melissa Robbins (Nashua, NH) picking up the assist. URI tied the game on an unassisted goal by Johanna Leskinen at 10:13, but SHU retook the lead on Klinoff's first of the day with helpers by Maura Leahy (Ashburnham, MA) and Caitlin Gottwald (Reading, MA) at 14:58.
Palazzo stole the puck at the blue line and raced in for a breakaway goal to give SHU a 3-1 lead at 5:15 of the second. Leskinen answered scoring on a backhander on a breakaway of her own at 16:43, with Alisha DiFilippo sending her in on the pass.
The Pioneers skated away with the game in the third, ripping off three unanswered. Palazzo tipped a blue-line wrist shot by Gottwald for her second of the day at 3:04. Klinoff blasted a slap shot inside the far post from inside the blue line on a rush started by Catie Ladner (Chaska, MN). Alex Davis stuffed in a rebound at 10:17, with Gottwald taking the initial shot for her third assist of the game.
Kristina Kennedy did put a third on the board for the Rams on a two-man advantage at 16:01, with Lauren Hillberg assisting, but the lead was safe enough for a Pioneers squad that outshot URI 52-23 for the game.
Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) made 20 saves for the victory.
The Pioneers are back in action in two weekends at home when they host Oswego State February 10-11.
