Bridgeport, CT – A night after notching a hat trick of assists for the Pioneers (13-11-2), sophomore Casey Stathopoulos notched a goal and an assist for the Pioneers as they completed a sweep of the Franklin Pierce Ravens Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers were able to score two first period goals en route to their 13th win of the season, a 3-1 triumph over Franklin Pierce.
An eventful first period saw both the Pioneers and Ravens have numerous chances to score, with SHU able to find the back of the net twice and Pioneer goalie Nicole Magee (Burlington, MA) saving all 13 shots that came her way. Sophomore leading scorer Casey Stathopoulos (Waltham, MA) got the scoring started for the Pioneers at 10:39 with her 15th goal of the season, a power play tally assisted by sophomore Whitney Henderson (Elkins Park, PA). Sacred Heart would extend their lead at 18:07, this time an assist from Stathopoulos to junior Sara Hanna (Lino Lakes, MN) who lit the lamp for her 7th goal of the season.
SHU and Franklin Pierce exchanged goals in the third period after a scoreless second period. The Ravens cut the lead in half at 5:06 of the third to make the score 2-1. Karsyn baker put one passed Magee, assisted by Jamie Wiley. The Pioneers would put the finishing touches on the Ravens with their third goal of the game at 10:39 of the third period. Senior Sarah Delaney (Whitman, MA) added the insurance goal with assists credited to junior Catie Ladner (Chaska, MN) and sophomore Meaghan Souza (Wilmington, MA).
The Pioneers look for three in a row tuesday night at home against Trinity.
