BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – A goal from junior forward Melissa Robbins (Nashua, NH) broke up a 1-1 tie with just 2:21 left in the game to lift the Pioneer women's hockey team to a victory over Rhode Island 2-1 Saturday afternoon at the Wonderland of Ice. Sacred Heart is now 2-0 for the first time since 2006.
Melissa Robbins, Casey Stathopulos, and Megan Ofner (Hamilton, NJ) all scored goals and added assists in the Pioneers second win over Rhode Island in as many days.
Unlike a day before, Rhode Island jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the first period, with a goal from Kristina Kennedy at 11:47. Sydney Collins and MaryKate Stimpson earned assists on the play.
Megan Ofner evened the score for the Pioneers at 17:39 of the second period. Robbins and Hannah Skelley (Wolfeboro, NH) both notched assists on the game-tying goal.
Following penalties on both teams, Robbins slipped the puck past Rhode Island goalie Kayla DiLorenzo to put SHU up 2-1. Junior Casey Stathopoulos (Waltham, MA) found Robbins in the slot, while Ofner was also credited with an assist.
Stathopoulos added an empty netter with four seconds left to make the final score 3-1.
Sacred Heart goaltender Nicole Magee (Burlington, MA) made 27 saves to earn her first win of the season.
Sacred Heart killed four Rhode Island penalties, while Rhode Island outshot the Pioneers, 28-25.
Sacred Heart heads up the Merritt Parkway to take on the Yale Bulldogs on October 18th.
