Second Period Dooms Pioneers in 7-1 Loss to Holy Cross

BRIDGEPORT, Conn – The Holy Cross Crusaders scored five second period goals on their way to a 7-1 win over the Sacred Heart Pioneers Friday night at the Wonderland of Ice. SHU falls to 3-2 on the season.

Rachel Miller opened up the scoring Holy Cross (1-0) at 3:26 of the first, assisted by Nicole Gianinno.

Rose Rather scored two goals in the second period for the Crusaders, while Katie Goguen added a goal and an assist.

Freshman defender Amie Varano (Duxbury, MA) scored the only goal for the Pioneers in the third period, her first goal in a Sacred Heart uniform.

Sophomore goaltender Nicole Magee (Burlington, MA) saved 14 of 15 Holy Cross shots in the third period, giving up just one goal. Sacred Heart was outshot 41-16 for the game.

SHU is back at home tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm as the Stevenson Mustangs come to town.
