BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Behind 28 saves by senior goalie Alexius Schutt (Elk River, Minn.), the Sacred Heart women's hockey team shutout Rhode Island 3-0 at Webster Bank Arena.
Sacred Heart (6-13-5) was rewarded for crashing the net with two goals in the first period. Hanna Skelley (Wolfeboro, N.H.) got the Pioneers on the board 2:36 into the game, sliding the rebound of an Alanna Woodford (Scituate, Mass.) shot past Rhode Island goalie Kayla DiLorenzo to make the score 1-0. Sacred Heart got its second goal just as the horn sounded to end the first period. Sara Hanna (Lino Lakes, Minn.) found herself in front of the net and slammed home the rebound of a Melissa Robbins (Nashua, N.H.) shot to give Sacred heart a 2-0 lead after one period.
After a scoreless second period, Sacred Heart scored its third goal with 5:11 to play in the game. Robbins put a Whitney Henderson (Elkins Park, Pa.) pass right into the back of the net to make the score 3-0. Schutt made the final score stand up, making 18 saves in the final two periods.
The Pioneers outshot the Rams 40-28 for the game, as both teams were 0-for-1 on the power play. DiLorenzo made 37 saves in goal for Rhode Island. Robbins and Casey Stathopoulos (Waltham, Mass.) each had two points in the game.
Sacred Heart opens a weekend series with Franklin Pierce on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport.
