Women's Hockey Falls 4-1 to Franklin Pierce
BRIDGEPORT, Conn - The Sacred Heart Women's hockey team let up three third period goals Friday night, falling to the Franklin Pierce Ravens, 4-1, at the Wonderland of Ice Friday night. Sacred Heart falls to 6-14-5 on the season, while FPU improves to 18-3-1.
Senior goaltender Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) turned away 40 saves in the loss, keeping the Pioneers in the game until the third period. With the help of Schutt, the Pioneers were able to kill off five Franklin Pierce power plays.
Karsyn Baker got the scoring started in the first period, wristing a shot past Schutt from the left wing to put the Ravens up 1-0. Franklin Pierce dominated the first period, outshooting the Pioneers 16-3.
It was more of the same in the second period, but Schutt made a few clutch saves to keep the Pioneers within one goal going into the third period.
The Pioneers tied the game up early in the third period with sophomore Hanna Skelley (Wolfeboro, NH) finding the back of the net off a rebound. Alanna Woodford and Casey Stathopoulos (Waltham, MA) notched assists on the power play goal.
It didn't take long for Franklin Pierce to respond as 18 seconds later Nina Danforth lit the lamp for what would be the game-winning goal. Lanie Matsumoto and Marisa Ketterman registered assists on the play.
The Ravens added two more insurance goals to put away the Pioneers for good. Jamie Wiley put one past Schutt at 8:15 of the third, while Marissa Ketterman scored FPU's fourth goal of the game at 17:11.
Franklin Pierce doubled the Pioneers in shots, 44-22. The Ravens have won three straight against Sacred Heart.
Sacred Heart and Franklin Pierce are back at it tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm., The Pioneers will honor nine departing seniors prior to the face-off as part of "Senior Day".
