Women's Hockey Ties Franklin Pierce 1-1 on Senior Day

BRIDGEPORT, Conn – On a day where the Sacred Heart women's hockey team honored its nine departing seniors, it was junior Alex Davis (Pembroke, MA) knocking one home to tie Franklin Pierce in the third period and salvage a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon at the Wonderland of Ice. The Pioneers finish the regular season 6-14-6.

For the second game in a row, senior goaltender Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) came up big for Sacred Heart, making 46 saves to keep the Pioneers in the game. Schutt made 40 saves in last night's game against FPU.

Franklin Pierce jumped all over Sacred Heart in the first period, outshooting the Pioneers 15-1. Colleen Doucette found the back of the net for Franklin to give them a 1-0 lead at 16:56 of the first. After a scrum in the front of the net, Doucette put one past Schutt with assists from Karsyn Baker and Michaela Faia.

The second period saw each team kill a couple of penalties and Franklin Pierce took a 1-0 lead into the third period. Schutt made 14 saves in the period.

The Pioneers battled back in the third, with Davis cleaning up a rebound off a breakaway from senior Sarah Hanna (Lino Lakes, MN). Hanna was initially stoned by FPU goaltender Shannon O'Neill, but Davis was in great position to knock the puck in the back of the net.

Schutt made a couple saves in overtime as neither team could find the game-winner and the Ravens and Pioneers tied for the first time this season.

Sacred Heart finishes its season next weekend at the ECAC Open Tournament at Holy Cross College.
