MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Amanda Fontaine made 39 saves to help the Sacred Heart women's ice hockey team stretch its unbeaten streak to three games with a 1-1 tie at Morrisville State on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers, who lost their first three games of the year, end November at 2-3-1.
A Taylor Moreland goal, her third of the season, just 6:53 into the game would be enough for Fontaine, whose 30 of 40 saves came in the first two periods. Haley Payne and Megan Ofner picked up their first assists of the season on score.
After a hectic opening 20 minutes that saw a combined 28 shots, there were just 33 in the final 45 minutes. The lone occurrence in which Fontaine was beat came with just 1:57 remaining in the second period. Bot goalies would combine to make just 16 saves in the final two periods to preserve the tie. Sacred Heart had three consecutive shots, by Megan Finlay, Amie Varano, and Brittany Smith, stopped in the extra period before Fontaine made the final two saves of the contest.
Morrisville State outshot SHU 40-21 on the afternoon, as Mustang goaltender Renee Schmaltz opposed Fontaine with 20 saves. The Pioneers killed off four power MSU power plays to run its streak of penalty kills to ten over the last three games.
Sacred Heart will compete in two more games before taking its winter break. The Pioneers have a home and home scheduled with Franklin Pierce next weekend, visiting the Ravens for a 2:30 pm start on Saturday before a 4:00 pm face off at the Sports Center of Connecticut on Sunday.
