GORHAM, ME (January 7, 2010) – The Sacred Heart University women’s ice hockey team earned a 4-4 ties with Southern Maine Thursday night on a power play goal from sophomore Caitlin Gottwald (Reading, MA) with 4:14 to play in the game. The Pioneer’s record now stands at 4-10-1, while the Huskies are 2-7-2.
Sophomores Jennifer Burroughs (Raleigh, NC) and Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT) each netted a goal in the first period to give the Pioneers a 2-1 advantage at the first intermission. Freshman Sarah Delaney (Whittman, MA) scored in the fourth minute of the second period to extend the SHU lead to two.
Starting with sophomore Lauren Whiting, Southern Maine scored three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead 13:54 into the third period. Sophomore Joanna Gaube scored twice in the third with the game tying and go-ahead goals.
Freshman Emily Siira (Cedarburg, WI) stopped 24 shots in net for Sacred Heart. In goal for the Huskies, freshman Molly Passerini made 38 saves.
The Pioneers stay in Maine for a weekend series at Bowdoin Saturday and Sunday.
