ASTON, PA (January 16, 2010) - Despite outshooting Neumann University 46-37 the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team fell, 10-4, Saturday night. The Knights (7-6-1) outscored the Pioneers (5-13-1) 5-0 after SHU narrowed the Neumann lead to one with over five minutes to play in the second.
Junior Stephanie Nakamura netted a power play goal, assisted by sophomore Jasper Thompson, 10:33 into the first period to put Neumann on the board first. Freshman Tanya Lamon, followed by junior Nicki Blazenko, each tallied a goal before the close of the first. Sophomore defender Caitlin Gottwald (Reading, MA) scored a shorthanded goal, on a feed from junior Lauren Fontaine, for SHU.
The two teams would begin the second period by trading goals. Less than two minutes into the second period, Fontaine brought the Pioneers within one with a goal from senior Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON) and sophomore Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT). Sophomore Khristine Acosta answered with a goal for the Knights 6:10 into the period. For the Pioneers, junior Taryn Lapierre (Oakland, RI) closed the deficit to one with a power play goal thee minutes later.
The second period continued to prove to be all offense as Neumann sophomore Angie Conte notched a goal midway through the stanza. SHU junior Kristina Hankins (Lexington, MA), from Palazzo, lit the lamp for the Pioneers' second shorthanded goal of the game. The Knights then distanced themselves for good with two more goals by the end of the frame.
Freshman goaltender Shannon Donnelly stopped 42 shots to earn the win for Neumann. In her second straight start, sophomore Raelene Sydor (St. Albert, AB) made 27 saves in the loss for Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers hit the road again next weekend for two games at Robert Morris on January 22 and 23.
