BRIDGEPORT, CT (February 19, 2010) – The Sacred Heart University women’s ice hockey team outshot the University of Rhode Island 45-24 Friday night, but still lost the game, 9-5. Sophomore Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT) scored twice for the Pioneers.
Palazzo put the Pioneers on the board first as she deflected a shot by freshman Sarah Delaney (Whittman, MA) into the net. The Rams answered back as junior Justine Ducie scored 47 seconds into a five on three opportunity. Junior Jackie Galvin (Canton, MA) appeared to give SHU the lead in the final minute of the first frame, but it was waived off because it went in off her skate.
URI took over in the second period as they lit the lamp four times. Sophomore forward Meghan Birnie led the charge by netting a pair of goals in the second stanza. Ducie notched her second goal of the game 8:01 into the period.
Both teams scored four times in the final period. Sacred Heart junior Kristina Hankins (Lexington, MA) scored a shorthanded goal for the first score of the frame. Sophomore Johanna Leskinen scored the next two goals for the Rams to put the URI lead at 7-2.
Junior goaltender Nina Goncarovs made 37 stops in the cage for the Rams. Freshman backup Megan McGhie made three saves after Goncarovs was lifted due to an injury. For the Pioneers, sophomore Raelene Sydor (St. Albert, AB) made 15 saves.
The two teams play again tomorrow at 2:00 in what will be the Pioneers’ regular season finale.
