NEW HAVEN, CT (November 28, 2009) – The Sacred Heart University women’s ice hockey team dropped their fourth straight of the season with a 11-1 defeat to Quinnipiac University. The game was the consolation round of the Nutmeg Classic at Yale University. The Pioneers fell to 1-9 overall, while the Bobcats improved to 7-5-4.
Quinnipiac got first period goals from Kristen Eklund, Breana Burton, and Kate Wheeler. Junior Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) answered for SHU with the first goal of the second period, but the Bobcats went on to score eight unanswered. Classmate Kristina Hankins (Lexington, MA) and sophomore Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT) each picked up an assist on the goal.
Victoria Vigilanti and former SHU goalie Amanda Nagel made five saves apiece in the victory. Freshman Emily Siira (Cedarburg, WI) started and made 34 saves, while allowing seven goals in over two periods of play. Sophomore Raelene Sydor (St. Albert, AB) gave up four goals and made 20 saves in relief of Siira.
The Pioneers return to action with a home game at the Wonderland of Ice against Nichols College on Tuesday December 2 at 7:00 pm.
