Pioneers Fall to Western Ontario in Exhibition, 5-3

BRIDGEPORT, CT (December 29, 2009) - The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team fell to Western Ontario, 5-3, in an exhibition contest at the Wonderland of Ice Tuesday night.  The Mustangs were paced by a pair of goals by second year player Aoife Cox first year player Jamie Carver to take a 4-1 advantage early in the third period.

The Pioneers answered with back-to-back power play goals by junior Taryn Lapierre (Oakland, RI) and sophomore Caitlin Gottwald (Reading, MA).  Gottwald ripped a slapshot from the point to cut the lead to one.  Junior Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, MN) assisted on both goals.

UWO sealed the victory with an empty net strike by third year player Ellie Seedhouse.

Second year player Lindsey Martin started and earned the win in two periods of work, stopping 18 shots.  In relief of Martin, third year goaltender Brittany O'Halloran made two saves.  Freshman Emily Siira (Cedarburg, WI) made 27 saves for SHU.

The Pioneers faceoff against the Mustangs again tomorrow at 2:00 pm.
