Setting the Scene... Postponed from Wednesday due to snow Sacred Heart faces Salve Regina Friday February 12 at the Wonderland of Ice. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 pm.
About Sacred Heart... The Pioneers, having ended a six game skip, enter tonight’s contest with a record of 6-16-1. Junior forward Lauren Fontaine leads the team in scoring with 29 points, 17 goals and 12 assists. Classmate Brittany Hartman has scored 12 goals and collected 13 assists, with a team-high four power play goals. Senior Kate Dunlop ranks third in scoring with eight goals and 14 assists. Sophomore Nicole Palazzo lis tied for the team lead in assists with 14. In between the pipes for the Pioneers, freshman Emily Siira has started 14 games and made 453 saves, while owning a .850 save percentage. Sophomore Raelene Sydor has stopped 235 shots in nine starts.
Scouting the Seahawks... Salve Regina travels to Bridgeport with a record of 12-6-3. Freshman Rachel Porter has recorded a team-high 16 points, including eight goals and eight assists. Kathleen Roche leads the team with in scoring with nine goals and four assists. Melanie Sherlock, sophomore Drew Chernisky, and freshman Sarah McCusker have each registered 11 points on the season. Sophomore Rebecca Simmons owns a .920 save percentage and 2.57 GAA in 12 starts.
Last Time Out... Sacred Heart skated to a 4-2 win over in-state rival Wesleyan in Middletown last Saturday. Fontaine led the way with a hat trick. Her first goal of the game was also the 50th of her career. Dunlop recorded two assists on the afternoon, while Hartman notched the fourth Pioneer goal and an assist of her own. Sydor posted 22 saves to earn her first win of the season.
Up Next... The Pioneers host Rhode Island for a two-game series starting February 19. Friday’s game is set to start at 7:00 pm ans Saturday’s will start at 2:00 pm. SHU concludes the 2009-’10 season by participating in the ECAC Open Tournament on February 27-28.
Captains... Kate Dunlop, the team’s lone senior, was named the captain of the Pioneers by head coach Tom O’Malley during the preseason. Junior Lauren Fontaine was honored with the title of assistant captain prior to SHU’s weekend series at Robert Morris (January 22-23).
Home Cookin’... The Red & White beat Nichols to start a stretch of seven straight home games. So far the Pioneers are 3-2 on their home ice, plus a split series with Western Ontario and a 4-4 tie in an exhibition matchup with Robert Morris (IL). Last season, Sacred Heart went 7-6 at the Wonderland of Ice.
Nutmeg Classic... Yale hosted the annual Nutmeg Classic at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, CT on Thanksgiving weekend. In the first round, SHU lost the opening game to the host Bulldogs 10-1. Sophomore Sara Reddington registered the lone Pioneer goal. The University of Connecticut took down Quinnipiac 1-0 to advance to the finals. In the championship round, UConn beat Yale 6-1.
Life on the Road... Sacred Heart opened the season with a string of seven straight away games, plus an exhibition at Rhode Island. The Pioneers returned home after completing a 1-6 mark on the road. SHU lost the opening series of the season at Maine with losses of 9-0 and 11-4.
