Women's Ice Hockey Faces Interstate Rival Quinnipiac

Setting the Scene...

Sacred Heart visits Quinnipiac for a 2:00 faceoff at the TD Bank Sports Centerin Hamden, CT. The Pioneers enter the contest with an 0-2 record after dropping a pair of games in a two game series to open the season at Maine last weekend. Today’s matchup will be the first regular season game for Quinnipiac.

About Sacred Heart...

Junior forward Lauren Fontaine and sophomore forward Nicole Palazzo lead the Pioneers in scoring with one goal and two assists apiece. Sophomore goaltender Raelene Sydor stopped 40 shots in the season-opener last Friday, but was pulled early on in Saturday’s game in favor of freshman Emily Siira. Siira registered 27 saves in just over 55 minutes between the pipes.

Scouting the Bobcats...

Quinnipiac is coming off of a 3-26-5 season from a year ago. Senior forward Janine Duffy is the highest scoring player remaining after scoring nine goals and collecting nine assists. Classmate, and team captain, Kallie Flor returns for the Bobcats after posting four goals and eight assists last season. Quinnipiac has a pair of newcomers competing for time in goal. Sophomore transfer, and former Pioneer, Amanda Nagel and freshman Victoria Vigilanti both aim to contribute in net.

Last Time They Met...

Quinnipiac topped Sacred Heart 3-0 at the Northford Ice Pavilion on February 28, 2004. Pioneer goalie Stephanie Boulay faced 71 shots on goal and recorded 68 saves. Gillian Gallagher scored twice to lead the way for the Bobcats.

2008-09 in Review...

Gina Arnone finished her career second all-time in points (127) and goals (75) with the Pioneers. She scored the second most goals in a season leading the team with 24. While at SHU, Nagel set the single-season mark for saves with 950 in her only season for the Pioneers. As a team, the Red and White achieved wins over Maine and Robert Morris for the first time in program history. The season ended with a 4-2 loss in the ECAC Open Tournament final to Holy Cross. Fontaine scored both goals for Sacred Heart.
