Setting the Scene... Sacred Heart returns to Bridgeport for the 2009-2010 home opener at the Wonderland of Ice. The Pioneers face off against the Holy Cross Crusaders at 7:00 pm.
About Sacred Heart... The Pioneers enter tonight’s contest with a record of 1-6. Junior forward Lauren Fontaine leads the team in scoring with three goals and three assists. Classmate Brittany Hartman ranks second for SHU with a pair of goals and three assists. Senior captain Kate Dunlop has netted two goals and added one assist. In between the pipes for the Pioneers, freshman Emily Siira has started four games and owns a .865 save percentage and 5.00 goals against average. Sophomore Raelene Sydor has made three starts and posted a .822 save percentage and 6.56 GAA.
Scouting the Crusaders... Holy Cross comes to the Wonderland with a perfect 4-0 mark. Led by sophomore forward Stacey Hochkins the Crusaders have outscored opponent 17-8 through four games. Hotchkins has a team-high five goals and six assists. Junior Jocelyn Kratchmer ranks second on the team in scoring with two goals and five assists, while freshman Rebecca O’Quinn has proven to be a key contributor with five assists. Sophomore goaltender Carly Dominick-Sobol holds a .980 save percentage and a 2.00 GAA, while going 3-0 between the pipes.
Last Time Out... The Pioneers split a pair of games at SUNY Potsdam over the weekend. SHU took the first game, 5-2, Friday night. In the second game, the Bears scored three times in the third period to take the victory, 6-3. Hartman recorded a goal in the first game and two assists in the second. Fontaine scored in both ends of the series and collected an assist in Friday’s win. Junior Taryn Lapierre and sophomore Lauren Towers each lit the lamp and picked up an assist in the victory.
Last Time They Met... Holy Cross defeated Sacred Heart, 4-2, in the ECAC Open Championship at the Hart Center on March 1. Junior Emily Henry put the Crusaders up 3-1 in the first. A pair of power play goals from Fontaine were not enough to complete the comeback for the Pioneers.
Life on the Road... Sacred Heart opened the season with a string of seven straight away games, plus an exhibition at Rhode Island. The Pioneers return home after completed a 1-6 mark on the road. SHU lost the opening series of the season at Maine with losses of 9-0 and 11-4. Since beating URI, 6-2, in an exhibition on October 24 the Pioneers have scored eight goals in their last two games.
Nutmeg Classic... After Sacred Heart faces off against Holy Cross for their first home game of the season the Pioneers head to Storrs, CT for the Nutmeg Classic on Thanksgiving weekend. The Nutmeg Classic is hosted by the University of Connecticut and played at the Mark Edwards Freitas Ice Forum. The Pioneers will take on Yale University on Friday November 27 at 4:00, while the Huskies will play Quinnipiac at 7:00. The winners will meet for the championship on Saturday at 7:00 and the losers will face off in the consolation game at 4:00.
