Setting the Scene... Sacred Heart hosts Oswego State for a weekend series at the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport, CT. Game one will be play at 7:00 pm Friday night followed by game two at 2:00 pm Saturday.
About Sacred Heart... The Pioneers enter this weekend's series with a record of 2-9. Junior forward Lauren Fontaine leads the team in scoring with six goals and three assists. Classmate Brittany Hartman ranks second for SHU with three goals and four assists. Sophomore Lauren Towers has been hot as of late, scoring twice and adding two assists since moving up to the first line. In between the pipes for the Pioneers, freshman Emily Siira has started eight games and made 257 saves, while owning a .857 save percentage. Sophomore Raelene Sydor has made three starts and posted a .829 save percentage.
Scouting the Lakers... Oswego State senior forward Jenna Kirkland leads the Lakers, 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the ECAC West, with six goals on the season. Juniors Emily Grippin and Sarah Hannon have each tallied a team-high four assists and netted one goal apiece. Sophomore Jillian Bergeron is second on the team in goals with four scores. Junior Emi Williams has played everu between in net for Oswego and holds a .933 save percentage and 1.99 goals against average.
Last Time Out... SHU defeated Nichols College, 3-1, for their first home win of the 2009-2010 season. Fontaine lit the lamp in the first period, assisted by sophomore Jennifer Burroughs, to put the Red & White on the board first. Juniors Taryn Lapierre and Kristina Hankins each added a goal en route to the victory. Siira recorded her second win of the season, allowing one goal and making 17 saves in between the pipes.
Last Time They Met... Sacred Heart swept a weekend series at Oswego State in the midst of a six game winning streak back in January of last season. The Pioneers took the first game 5-1 and the second 4-3. Fontaine and Lapierre recorded a goal in each game and an assist in the first. Sophomore Nicole Palazzo and Jamie Mey both netted a goal and collected an assist in the series.
Up Next... The Pioneers play host to Robert Morris College, of Illinois, on December 11 for a 7:00 pm matchup.
Home Cookin'... The Red & White beat Nichols to start a stretch of seven straight home games. The Pioneers play Western Ontario twice at the end of December and will host Lake Forest in the first game of the new year on January 5. Last season, Sacred Heart went 7-6 at the Wonderland of Ice.
Nutmeg Classic... Yale hosted the annual Nutmeg Classic at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, CT on Thanksgiving weekend. In the first round, SHU lost the opening game to the host Bulldogs 10-1. Sophomore Sara Reddington registered the lone Pioneer goal. The University of Connecticut took down Quinnipiac 1-0 to advance to the finals. In the championship round, UConn beat Yale 6-1.
Life on the Road... Sacred Heart opened the season with a string of seven straight away games, plus an exhibition at Rhode Island. The Pioneers returned home after completed a 1-6 mark on the road. SHU lost the opening series of the season at Maine with losses of 9-0 and 11-4. Since beating URI, 6-2, in an exhibition on October 24 the Pioneers have scored 11 goals in their last three games.
