Pioneers Open 2011 Season with 21-8 Loss to Brown

FAIRFIELD, CT (February 26, 2011) – Sacred Heart junior Katilin Rochler (Wading River, NY) scored three goals but the Pioneers were dealt a 21-8 season opening loss to Brown University Saturday afternoon on Campus Field.  Brown's Bre Hudgins and Kaela McGilloway each scored five goals to lead the Bear attack.

Brown's (1-0) Danielle Mastro got the scoring started just 42 seconds into play on an unassisted marker and the Bears ran out to a 4-0 lead in the game's opening seven minutes.  SHU freshman Kelsey Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) got the Pioneers on the scoreboard with her first collegiate goal at 22:06.  Hudgins notched her second and third goals to put Brown up 6-1 by the 20 minute mark.

Rochler put her first on the board at 16:06, unassisted, but the Bears took control of the game with a seven-goal run over the next nine minutes.  McGilloway scored three on the run while Hudgins tacked on her fourth.  SHU's Jessica Ingrilli (Wantagh, NY) ended the run at 4:44 and added her second just before half.  McGilloway posted her fifth score of the game and Brown carried a 14-4 lead into the locker room.

Sacred Heart (0-1) cut the lead to 15-6 with back-to-back goals from Rochler and junior Kate Kmiotek (Farmingville, NY) five minutes in but that would be as close as the Pioneers would come the rest of the way.  Brown answered with consecutive goals from Alexa Caldwell and Lindsay Minges and ended the game with a three-goal run that included Hudgins' fifth score of the afternoon.

The Bears outshot the Pioneers 33-19 and forced SHU into 24 turnovers and nine failed clears (6-15).  Brown turned it over just nine times and picked up 21 ground balls in the win.  Isabel Harvey need make just four saves in 43 minutes of action to record the win in cage.

SHU's Kmiotek added an assist to her scoring totals while Russo had six draw controls to go along with her goal.  Freshman Emily Pepe (Westhampton, NY) scored a goal and dished out a pair of assists.

The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they play host to the Iona Gaels at 3:00 pm.
