Pioneers Drop Third-Straight Falling at UConn 19-11
STORRS, CT (March 12, 2011) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team dropped it's third-straight game Saturday afternoon falling at the University of Connecticut, 19-11. Juniors Kate Kmiotek (Farmingville, NY) and Kate Rochler (Wading River, NY) each tallied three goals in the loss. UConn's Lauren Kahn and Lauren Gunning each scored four times for the Huskies.
SHU (1-4) jumped out in front with a pair of goals in the game's opening two and half minutes. Freshman Kelsey Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) scored on an 8-meter attempt at 28:37 and Rochler notched her first at 27:28. The Pioneers built their lead to 4-3 by the 19 minute mark as Kmiotek scored her first and sophomore Emily Pepe buried a feed from the junior captain.
The Huskies (5-1) controlled the rst of the first half and rang up six-straight goals to build a 9-4 lead. Kahan started the rally with two-straight markers at 16:47 and 13:09. The Pioneers got the last goal of the first half as Kmiotek scored on an 8-meter attempt with 1:32 left ot trail 9-5 at the break.
UConn kept their dominant run going in the second half as they outscored the Pioneers 8-2 into the 11 minute mark. The Huskies opened the second half scoring four-straight with Jordan Christopher starting the rally at 26:58 off a pass from Gunning and then ending it at 25:14, again from Gunning. SHU's Alyssa Dorsey (Massapequa, NY) and Pepe scored around a Gunning goal but UConn would stretch their lead to 10 with three-straight.
Catherine Gross, Kahan and M.E. Lapham made it 17-7 to put the game out of reach with 11:16 left. The Pioneers got two more scores from Rochler, another from Kmiotek and an unassisted score from freshman Shelby Vaccaro (Brightwaters, NY).
Kmiotek added a pair of assists to her three goals for a five point afternoon. The Pioneers were out shot 32-21 in the loss.
UConn's Gunning dished three assists to compliment her four goals while Kahn assisted on two goals herself. Lapham, Christopher, Catherine Gross and Kiersten Tupper all scored twice.
The Pioneers will play host to the Louisville Cardinals on Thursday afternoon at 3 pm.
