FARIFIELD, CT (March 28, 2011) - Sacred Heart freshman Kelsey Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) was named the Northeast Conference Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week announced by the league on Monday.
Russo put up some big numbers last week as Sacred Heart split a pair of NEC contests. She tallied six goals - including 5-of-8 on 8-meter free position shots - along with three assists, eight draw controls and three ground balls. In an 11-10 overtime setback to Robert Morris on Friday, Russo registered a goal and an assist and also won two draws. She exploded for a career-high five goals in Sunday's 18-9 win over Saint Francis (PA). Of the five tallies, four came on free position attempts. She also tacked on two assists and hauled in six draw controls. On the year, the Lindenhurst, NY native is third on the Pioneers with 18 goals and leads the squad with 22 draw control wins. She ranks fifth in the NEC with 2.44 draw controls per game.
Russo and the Pioneers return to the field this Friday, April 1st when they head to Quinnipiac to face the Bobcats at 3 pm.
