Second Half Rally Not Enough as SHU Falls at Bryant 11-10
SMITHFIELD, RI (April 8, 2011) - For the second-straight game the Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team fell behind early in the first half, going down 7-0 at Bryant on Friday on the way to losing 11-10 to the Bulldogs in Northeast Conference action. SHU raillied in the second half with eight goals but couldn't complete the comeback falling to 1-3 in the NEC.
Bryant (4-8, 3-2 NEC) never trailed on Friday running out to a 7-0 lead by the 10 minute mark. Mary Green got the run started opening the scoring at 28:15. Five different Bulldogs would score before Green made it 7-0 with her second at 10:05.
The Pioneer (2-9, 1-3 NEC) offense finally got started with 9:02 on the clock as senior Jessica Ingrilli (Wantagh, NY) scored unassisted. Bryant's Keckeisen notched her second 58 seconds later but the Pioneers would close the first half with two-straight coming off the sticks of juniors Aurie Pluijmakers (Freehold, NJ) and Kaitlin Rochler (Wading River, NY), both off feeds from sophomore Emily Pepe (East Quogue, NY). SHU trailed 8-3 at the break after getting out shot 18-10 over the first 30 mintues.
SHU cut the lead to 8-5 after the first five minutes of play to start the second. Pepe found the back of the cage off a feed from junior Kate Kmiotek (Farmingville, NY) just 37 seconds in and freshman Shelby Vaccaro (Brightwaters, NY) followed unassisted at 24:49.
The Bulldogs answered with consecutive markers at 18:36 and 17:07 to pull in front 10-5 but the Pioneers would put together a run that started just 14 seconds later. Ingrilli scored off a feed from Kmiotek at 16:53 and SHU rattled off four-straight over the next eight mintues.
Igrilli tallied her third of the day, unassisted, at the 15 minute mark while Kmiotek followed with a pair at 8:51 and 8:18, both from Pepe to pull within 10-9. Bryant would quickly answer and put the breaks on the Pioneer rally. Green buried her third just 33 seconds after Kmiotek's second, coming off a feed from Lisa Vendel.
SHU's Alyssa Dorsey (Massapequa, NY) scored with 4:37 left to again cut the lead to one, coming from Pepe, her career-high fifth assist on the day. Bryant won the ensuing draw but turned the ball over setting up one last push for the Pioneer offense. SHU got off a pair of shots in the closing minutes, from Kmiotek and Vaccaro, both wide allowing Bryant to retain possesion and run out the clock.
The Pioneers out shot Bryant 16-7 and forced 12 turnovers in the second half but again couldn't overcome the early deficit.
Sacred Heart returns to action at Central Connecticut on Sunday. Game time is scheduled for 1 pm.
