SHU’s Kaitlin Rochler Scores Five as Pioneers Beat Long Island, 13-8

FAIRFIELD, CT (April 11, 2011) – Sacred Heart junior Kaitlin Rochler (Wading River, NY) scored five goals and passed out three assists to lead the Pioneers past Long Island, 13-8, in Northeast Conference play Friday afternoon.  The Pioneers out shot LIU 32-18 and forced 20 Blackbird turnovers in the win to improve to 4-9 and 3-3 in the NEC.

Rochler wasted little time in getting the SHU offense on track, scoring the Pioneers first four goals of the game starting at 27:22.  Her fourth scored came off a feed from sophomore Emily Pepe (East Quogue, NY) to give SHU a 4-1 lead with 19:44 on the clock.  A pair of SHU freshmen hooked-up for a score at 13:03 as Shelby Vaccaro (Brightwaters, NY) set-up Kelsey Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) for her first of two on the day.

Long Island (1-12, 1-5 NEC) dug in and controlled the next 10 minutes of action, scoring three-straight to pull within one and force a SHU timeout.  Caitlin Farrell scored at the 11 minute mark and Shakoya Smith followed with an 8-meter goal at 8:39.  Sara LaNoir cut the Pioneer lead to 5-4 with an unassisted goal with 5:52 left.

The Pioneers (4-9, 3-3 NEC) came out of the time-out and controlled the final five minutes of the half as Russo notched her second off a feed from Alyssa Dorsey (Massapequa, NY) with 2:05 left.  SHU struck once more right at the halftime horn as Rochler buried her fifth of the afternoon and her team-leading 29th this season.  Junior Kate Kmiotek (Farmingville, NY) dished to Rochler right in front who just beat the horn for a 7-4 lead at the break.

After scoring five in the first half, Rochler set up three SHU goals in the second half, her first going to senior Jessica Ingrilli (Wantagh, NY) at 28:24. LaNoir scored on an 8-meter attempt at 27:10 but SHU pulled away with a three goal run over the next 10 minutes.

Junior Kelli Rutledge (Howell, NJ) scored her first of the season off a feed from Pepe followed by two free-position scores from Kmiotek for an 11-5 lead with 17:28 left.  Rochler assisted on Kmiotek's third goal and a score from Pepe to round out the Sacred Heart scoring.  Sophomore Megan Pepe (East Quogue, NY) made seven saves to earn the win in goal.

The Pioneers will play host to Wagner on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm on Senior Day.  SHU will honor their three graduating seniors, Elizabeth Drehwing, Jessica Ingrilli and Nicole Messina before the game.
