Kelsey Russo Earns Second NEC Rookie Award

FAIRFIELD, CT (April 18, 2011) - Sacred Heart freshman Kelsey Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) was named the Northeast Conference Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week for the second time this season on Monday.

Russo is now a two-time winner of the NEC Rookie of the Week award. Last week she scored seven goals to go along with two assists, six draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers in Sacred Heart's 2-0 week. The Pioneers are riding a three-game win streak and are now just one game out of the final NEC playoff spot with two regular season games remaining. Russo scored twice and registered two ground balls and two caused turnovers as the Pioneers downed Long Island, 13-8, on Friday, then exploded for five goals, two assists and five draw controls in Sacred Heart's 19-7 conquest of Wagner on Sunday. Russo leads the NEC with 10 free position goals on the year. The Lindenhurst, NY native is also third on the Pioneers with 29 goals and ranks fourth with 35 points.

Russo and the Pioneers will close out the regular season this week on the road at Monmouth and Mount St. Mary's.  The Pioneers are 4-3 in the NEC standings, a game behind both the Hawks and the Mount as they continue they continue the hunt for a playoff spot.
