FAIRFIELD, CT(September 8, 2011) - Sacred Heart head women's lacrosse coach Laura Cook announced that seniors Kate Kmiotek (Farmingville, NY), Kaitlin Rochler (Wading River, NY) and Mary LaGrassa (Massapequa, NY) have a been named team captains for the 2012 season.
Kmiotek will captain the Pioneers for the second-straight season in 2012. A a three-time All-Northeast Conference honoree, she was the only player in the league last season to rank in the top-10 in all three major statistical categories. Kmiotek ranked third in the NEC in points, leading the Pioneers with 58 on the year (3.41 pg). Her 38 goals ranked fifth among league leaders, averaging 2.24 goals per game. She completed the trifecta by ranking 10th in assists (1.18 pg). She broke the 100 goal mark for her career (103) last season and now ranks ninth all-time at SHU for career points (140) and in career goals.
Rochler had a break-out junior season offensively, finishing tied for second on the team in scoring with 46 points on the year. She was second to Kmiotek with 35 goals scored, including a pair of game-winners. She led the team with 35 goals scored on 61 shots taken, a .574 shooting percentage. Rochler also dished out 11 assists and had 16 ground balls for the season. Rochler will enter her final season with 61 career goals and 23 career assists on her ledger.
LaGrassa started every game defensively for the Pioneers last season. A two-year starter heading into her senior season, she finished the year with 17 ground balls, eight caused turnovers and eight draw control wins last spring. During her career, she has scored a pair of goals with a pair of assists and has 74 ground balls and 34 caused turnovers to her credit.
