AMHERST, MA (March 4, 2012) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team fell behind 13-2 at the half en route to a 21-7 loss at the University of Massachusetts Sunday afternoon. UMass got seven points from Katie Ferris and three goals from Melissa Carelli to lead the charge. The Pioneers got a pair of goals apiece from senior Kate Kmiotek (Farmingville, NY) and freshman Taylor Babin (Ellicott City, MD).
Ten different players found the back of the cage for UMass as the move to 5-0 to start the 2012 season with the win. The Minutewomen jumped out 3-0 in the first eight minutes before SHU could get on the scoreboard on Kmiotek's first off a feed from junior Emily Pepe (East Quogue, NY) at the 19:12 mark.
From the UMass ripped off seven-straight over the next 11 minutes to grab control and never looked back. Babin stopped the run with her first at 5:41 to trail 10-2 but three more by UMass before the half left the Pioneers in a 13-2 hole heading to the second stanza.
Ferris scored twice to fuel a run of seven-straight UMass goals to start the second half, putting the Minutewomen comfortably in front 20-2 with just under 20 minutes still to play. UMass held a commanding edge on shots, 36-17 and dominated on the draw, 20-9.
The Pioneers will return home on Wednesday and take on cross-town rival Fairfield University. Opening draw is at 3:00 pm.
