FAIRFIELD, CT (April 9, 2012) - Sacred Heart junior Emily Pepe (East Quogue, NY) and freshman Taylor Babin (Ellicot City, MD) received Northeast Conference Women's Lacrosse honors after leading the Pioneers to wins at Robert Morris and Saint Francis (PA) last week. Pepe was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week while Babin took home the Rookie of the Week honor. It is the first career NEC weekly award for both.
Pepe was clutch for the Pioneers over the weekend collecting 11 points to lead Sacred Heart to a pair of wins, propelling them back into the NEC playoff hunt. The junior scored five goals and passed out six assists in wins at Robert Morris and Saint Francis (PA) this weekend. Despite only putting up two goals in a 10-9 double OT victory at Robert Morris, her second of the day proved to be the most important as it came during sudden-victory over time. Pepe's two assists came on the Pioneers three-goal run to end regulation, tying the game and sending it to overtime. On Saturday at Saint Francis (PA), the attacker matched her season and career high with seven points, off of three goals and four assist as the Pioneers collected a 14-11 win. Pepe scored three times and assisted on two others in the first half, helping the Pioneers to an 8-4 lead. On the year she leads the team with 31 assists, which ranks second in the conference. Her 4.33 points per game also ranks second.
Babin helped lead the Pioneers to a pair of wins in Western Pennsylvania over the weekend. Babin scored three goals and assisted on three others in wins over Robert Morris and Saint Francis (PA). The freshman attacker scored three times and had the assist on the double overtime game-winner to beat the Colonials 10-9. Babin scored twice in the first half but her third came with 10:42 left to pull the Pioneers within a goal. The Maryland native buried an eight-meter shot to get SHU to 9-8 and then hit Emily Pepe for the game winner at 4:13 in the second overtime, earning the Pioneers the 10-9 win. Her three goals set a new season high for the freshman attacker. Bain then tallied a pair of assists in the 14-11 win at Saint Francis (PA).
The duo along with the rest of the rest of the Pioneers take the field Friday afternoon against Quinnipaic at 4:00 pm.
