FAIRFIELD, CT (March 6, 2013) - The Fairfield Stags scored 18 goals on 33 shots Wednesday afternoon, dealing visiting Sacred Heart an 18-3 loss to drop the Pioneers to 0-3 to star the 2013 season. The Pioneers were held to just three unassisted goals on 16 shots in the loss.
Fairfield's Melanie Raso finished with six points, scoring four goals and assisting on two others for the Stags, who evened their record at 3-3. The Stags sprinted out to a 5-0 lead in the game's first five minutes, scoring on each of their first five shots. Goals from Jenna Slowey and Jenna Fuchs, two from Chloe Mangan and one from Amanda Best got the Stags off and running.
The Pioneers got on the board at 17:50 as sophomore Jacqueline Zlevor (Medfield, MA) scored unassisted. Fairfield held the Pioneers there and ran off four-straight to close the first half for a 9-1 lead at the break. Raso scored three of her four goals on the run and Slowey tacked on the other Stag marker.
Fairfield scored on half the shots they took in the first half while goalkeeper Chelsey Sidaras made six of her seven saves in the first half.
SHU's Taylor Babin (Ellicot City, MD) and Emily Pepe (East Quogue, NY) each scored for the Pioneers in the second half to pull SHU within 15-3 with just under 15 minutes to play. From there, the Stags kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard and tacked on three more to solidify the win.
The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday, March 12th when they stay in state and travel to the Yale Bulldogs.
