SHU’s Russo Scores Four but Pioneers Fall at Yale, 15-9

NEW HAVEN, CT (March 12, 2013) – Sacred Heart junior Kelsey Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) tied her career high with five goals but the Pioneers dropped a 15-9 decision at Yale University Tuesday afternoon.  Junior Shelby Vaccaro (Brightwaters, NY) had five points, matching her career-high with three goals and assisting on two others.  The Pioneers fall to 0-4 to start the season with the loss.

The Yale Bulldogs (4-2) held a 16-10 edge on draws and outshot the Pioneers 34-17 in the win.  Yale's Devon Rhodes and Nicole Daniggelis scored four goals apiece for the Bulldogs.

Yale opened up a 3-0 lead just over five minutes in forcing a Pioneer time-out with 24:50 on the clock.  Daniggelis opened the scoring 1:13 in to the game and Jen DeVito made it 2-0 at the 28 minute mark.  The Pioneers turned it over on their first three possessions with a failed clear at 22:00 leading to Yale's fourth goal, DeVito's second of the game. 

The Bulldogs lead hit 4-0 before the Pioneers first score of the day off the stick of sophomore Taylor Babin (Ellicott City, MD) at 20:51.  SHU's Russo scored back-to-back goals starting at 15:08 to pull SHU within 6-2.  The Bulldogs led 8-2 but the Pioneers closed the half strong over the final five minutes, outscoring Yale 3-1 in that span.  Russo added her second of the half and Vaccaro tacked on two capped by an 8-meter goal with 15 seconds left to cut the Yale lead to 9-5 at the half.

SHU scored on their first four shots and finished the half with five goals on six shots in the half.  The Pioneers were plagued by 10 turnovers in the first half and had four failed clears.

Yale opened the second half scoring four-straight as Rhodes put two in in the first 3:08.  Lauren Wackerie and Daniggelis gave the Bulldogs a 13-5 lead scoring back-to-back at 19:25 and 19:14.   Russo put three goals on the board in the final 16:56, scoring twice on 8-meter attempts.  Russo pulled the Pioneers within 14-9 at 10:09 but Yale kept SHU off the board the rest of the way and Daniggelis added an insurance goal.

SHU returns home on Saturday afternoon to play host to the University of Massachusetts.  Opening draw is scheduled for 3:00 pm
