FAIRFIELD, CT (April 19, 2013) - Sacred Heart senior Emily Pepe (East Quogue, NY) scored three goals and dished out four assists to lead the Pioneers to a 16-7 win over visiting Saint Francis U in Northeast Conference play Friday afternoon. The Pioneers improved to 5-9 overall and evened their NEC record at 4-4.
Pepe finished with a season-best seven points and was one of four Pioneers who scored three goals in the win. Juniors Kelsey Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) and Shelby Vaccaro (Brightwaters, NY) and sophomore Taylor Babin (Ellicott City, MD) all tallied three markers as SHU out shot Saint Francis 26-19 on Friday.
Babin put the first goal of the game on the board at 27:51 and the Pioneers ran up a 5-1 lead. Vaccaro scored twice on the run while freshman Jesslyn Joseph (Bolton, MA) and Russo tacked on scored. The Red Flash cut the lead to 5-3 on back-to-back goals by Lindsay Ingram and Christina Fini at 12:42 and 11:31.
SHU finished off the first half strong with four-straight, starting with two-straight from Pepe. Russo capped the rally burying an 8-meter attempt just as the halftime horn sounded for a 9-3 halftime lead. Pepe and freshman Alison Braig (Reisterstown, MD) made it 11-3 in the opening minutes of the second half.
The Red Flash (4-12, 1-7 NEC) ended a stretch of 23:17 without a goal at the 21:04 mark of the second half as Rebecca Meyer scored off a feed from Katie Schaaf. The duo hooked up again at 17:54 to cut the Pioneer lead to 11-5, forcing a SHU time-out. The Pioneers responded with a four-goal rally that put the game out of reach at 15-5 with 13:30 left.
SHU will close out their season on Sunday afternoon when they host Robert Morris at 12:00 noon. It will be "Senior Day" as SHU recognizes their three seniors in Emily and Megan Pepe and Morgan Merriman (Seattle, WA) before the game.
