The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team dropped a 20-3 non-conference decision to host University of Vermont, Saturday afternoon in Burlington, Vermont. The Catamounts improve to 7-1, while the Pioneers fall to 1-4.
Vermont struck 36 seconds into the game, and scored three times in the first 1:56 of the contest, on its way to building a 6-0 edge with 8:41 remaining in the half. Alyssa Pearce (Shoreham, N.Y.) put the Pioneers on the board with an unassisted goal 19 seconds later to make the score 6-1 Vermont.
The Catamounts scored twice in the final 1:42 of the half to take an 8-1 lead into the intermission and scored the first six goals of the second-half, building a 14-1 edge with 21:58 to play in regulation. Caitlin Delaney (Cherry Hill, N.J.) scored for Sacred Heart with 20:55 to play, which was answered by six goals from the Catamounts. Delaney fed Kylie Calandra (Washington Township, N.J.) for the Pioneers final tally with 3:50 remaining for the final tally, 20-3.
Kelly Keenan (Wantagh, N.Y.) made 10 saves for Sacred Heart, to go along with a team-best six ground balls. Meg Hopkins earned the win for Vermont, stopping five shots and allowing two goals in 50:38 of action. Mackenzie Maher allowed a goal in her 9:22 of action.
Delaney had a team-best three draw controls and also caused two turnovers on the day.
Sacred Heart returns to action on Wednesday, March 19 when it hosts Manhattan at 3 pm.
