NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team lost its final non-conference tuneup Saturday 17-5 to the Yale Bulldogs at Reese Stadium.
Caitlin Delaney and Averi Farhat each had two goals and an assist to lead the SHU offense. Delaney also had three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Paige Hammick made six saves and had four groundballs.
Yale (6-5) scored the first eight goals of the game, as Hope Hanley's second of the game but the Bulldogs ahead 8-0 with 14:47 to play in the first. Madeleine Gramigna also had two goals in that opening run. Sacred Heart (2-7) got on the board at the 14:05 mark as Farhat assisted on Delaney's 15th goal of the season. After Yale pushed its lead to 10-1, the Pioneers got back-to-back goals from Farhat and Alyssa Pearce to cut the deficit to seven, 10-3, with 5:34 remaining in the half. Delaney's second goal of the game came with 0:04 left in the half, making the score 12-4.
The Bulldogs outshot the Pioneers 36-13 and had 20 groundballs to SHU's 15. Each team committed 16 turnovers. Gramigna and Hannah Logan both had hat tricks for Yale.
The Pioneers open Northeast Conference play on Friday, April 7 at Campus Field at 3 p.m. against Central Connecticut.
